Ubisoft last van 93 tot 95% piracy rate
De hoge piracy-rate van 93 tot 95 procent is voor Ubisoft reden om te investeren in free-to-play op pc. Op deze manier hoopt het bedrijf toch geld te verdienen aan pc-games, aldus Yves Guillemot van Ubisoft. "We want to develop the PC market quite a lot and F2P is really the way to do it."
Het voordeel van free-to-play is dat er geld verdiend kan worden aan landen waar dat voorheen niet kon. Landen waar Ubisofts games niet gekocht maar wel gespeeld werden bijvoorbeeld. "It's a way to get closer to your customers, to make sure you have a revenue. On PC it's only around five to seven per cent of the players who pay for F2P, but normally on PC it's only about five to seven per cent who pay anyway, the rest is pirated. It's around a 93 to 95 per cent piracy rate, so it ends up at about the same percentage. The revenue we get from the people who play is more long term, so we can continue to bring content."
Ubisoft heeft op de GamesCom vorige week enkele nieuwe free-to-play-games aangekondigd waaronder grote titels als Silent Hunter Online, Anno Online en The Settlers Online. Door het aanbieden van free-to-play-games kan het veel bekritiseerde DRM-systeem bij deze games verdwijnen.
