Pachter: Xbox LIVE Platinum op komst
Gamers in Amerika, Canada, Mexico en Groot-Brittannië vervloeken Microsoft op dit moment nog voor de verhoging die het bedrijf invoert vanaf 1 oktober voor hun Xbox LIVE-service en analist Micheal Pachter denkt dat het nog erger wordt.
Volgens Pachter komt er een nieuwe Xbox LIVE-classificatie. Naast Silver en Gold, krijgen gamers in de toekomst ook de keuze voor Platinum, een service die ongeveer honderd dollar kost. Dat zal Microsoft tussen de honderd en hondervijftig miljoen aan extra inkomsten opleveren. En terwijl het voor het bedrijf helemaal niet veel kost om te leveren, met hier en daar extra content.
“I think that they will reinvest at least this much in developing other new applications, and will roll out a premium service with $100-200 million worth of enhancements. If they can get 2 million users to switch from the $60 plan to the $100 plan, they’ll make an extra $80 million a year, and can keep investing to try to grow that business.
... For all I know, the Platinum plan might include virtual goods credits for various Microsoft games. If members could get specialized Halo armor or weapons worth the extra $40, they might be more willing to sign up, and it doesn’t really cost Microsoft anything to offer things like that ... I think that the possibilities are limitless, although it’s a bit early to speculate on what precisely they will offer."
Microsoft heeft in het verleden laten zien dat ze het geen probleem vinden om extra geld te vragen van gamers voor hun producten en het zal niemand verbazen mocht dit plan ooit om de hoek komen. De vraag is nu of gamers inderdaad die extra veertig dollar of euro voor een extra Halo-harnas over hebben.
