Gratis Dr Who Adventure Games

Afgelopen Paasweekeinde is de BBC begonnen met het uitzenden van een nieuwe serie Dr Who-afleveringen, met een nieuwe Doctor in de hoofdrol. Vandaag maakt de BBC bekend dat er ook een serie van vier games met deze nieuwe Doctor in ontwikkeling is. De episodische adventures zullen ieder een uur of twee duren en vanaf juni gratis (!) beschikbaar zijn.

De BBC heeft de van Broken Sword bekende developer Charles Cecil, alsmede de studio Sumo Digital ingehuurd voor de ontwikkeling van het spel. De schrijvers van de TV-serie schrijven de verhalen voor de games. Zij spreken de hoop uit, hiermee nieuwe mensen aan het gamen te krijgen.

"Establishing new forms of drama is exactly what the BBC should be doing. By aiming these interactive episodes at the broad audience of the TV show - unique in British television, in that it encompasses at least three generations - we're aiming to encourage the family to gather round the PC or Mac in the same way they do the television," aldus Simon Nelson, hoofd van BBCs Vision Multiplatform-afdeling.

De acteurs van de nieuwe serie, te weten Matt Smith en Karen Gillan (The Doctor en Amy), spreken de stemmen van de spellen in. Op de site "Develop Online" vind je meer concept art, een paar screenshots en een interview met Steven Moffat en Piers Wenge, de producers van zowel de serie als de spellen.

Steven Moffat legt bijvoorbeeld uit waarom het geen Tomb Raider-achtige game is geworden: "You were always shooting things – and the shooting parts are really, really dull. I always wanted to solve the problem of the big tomb, not worry about how long it’s taking to kill a sodding lion – but that’s not exciting, because you’re not really killing a lion anyway, you’re just pressing a button. But in The Adventure Games you’re solving a puzzle, and the Doctor is a great character to just be in the company of or to play in the adventure. You’re solving puzzles, you’re being clever! And of course, when you talk about children playing it, one thing the Doctor does is run away – most heroes don’t do that, but sometimes he’ll leg it." Bovendien past het niet bij het karakter van The Doctor om zich te verdedigen met een wapen, hij lost gevaarlijke situaties op andere manieren op.
